Feeling Pinched

Many of us are on fixed incomes or living off retirement accounts that need to be managed wisely.  Learning how to take advantage of senior discounts and other money-saving tips is a major focus of Seniors Helping Seniors.

There are a number of ways in which senior citizens can protect their hard-earned money and still enjoy a comfortable lifestyle on a budget.

The senior experts on this site will help to teach you how to find out who offers discounts, how to ask for them and how to get the most out of retail incentives.  Many stores, theaters, restaurants, travel destinations, accommodations, airlines and more offer senior citizen discounts; however, they may not advertise these discounts, and so we make sure you know what is available and how to use these discounts to your advantage.

Some of our information covers free reward and incentive programs offered by the same companies that have discount pricing for seniors.  While some retailers may only allow the use of one discount at a time, others will let you combine more than one for greater savings.  We will show you how to navigate coupon and discount code sites for greater savings utilization in both bricks-and-mortar stores in your community and their online outlets.

We offer information on generic products and how they stack up against brand names, including prescription drugs.  We also explore online avenues for purchasing generic products where the sites offer special discounts, including free shipping or extra value savings in a clearance or bargain area of their websites.

We will give you the inside information about the practice of doctors stocking free samples, and how to ask for them when a new drug is prescribed.  We will also discuss strategies for applying to pharmaceutical companies that provide free medications to those who qualify, as well as how to use their discount codes and coupons effectively.

We also know the importance of examining and comparing insurance companies and obtaining the best coverage for the least amount of money.  This includes tips on combining home and car insurance, purchasing Medigap coverage and using medical personnel and facilities that are in-network participants if you have private health insurance.

We also address bank fees and credit cards, financial planning and mortgage advice.  Many banks offer a no-fee checking account for senior citizens, and other discounts may apply as well.  We will help you learn how to ask a credit card company to lower interest rates or waive their annual fee.  We will also demonstrate how creating an online account for banking or paying bills saves quite a bit of money in postage.

Of course, no section on money-saving tips and budgeting would be complete without cost-cutting tips for the home.  In this area, our seniors discuss everything from changing to fluorescent or energy-saving light bulbs and which appliances are safe to unplug when they are not in use, to what the “Energy Star” label means and how to cut costs when purchasing new appliances for the home.

We are also open to all suggestions and ideas about cost-cutting tips for senior citizens, so we invite you to the forum, where you can join the discussion.
